Have you ever gone on a road trip with a small child?
The phrase “are we there yet?” on repeat every 15 minutes until you finally are in fact, there, wherever that may be.
That’s how I feel about Ryan Day.
Continually sitting in the backseat, helpless as to the destination, but repeatedly asking, “are we there yet?”
Every single season, we’re fed the same story over and over. Ryan Day is the coach to get the job done. The roster is loaded with talent across the board. THIS IS THE YEAR!
And then…
Saturday came and went, and the cloud of pepper spray in the middle of the field faded away, flags thrown on the ground, players being torn apart by coaches, and Ryan Day standing there, facing his fourth consecutive loss to TTUN, and another crushing defeat in a game where the lights seemed all too bright.
20-point favorites, at home, with a $20+ million-dollar roster, with all the motivation you would ever need, and that’s the result.
Another season where Ryan Day and the Buckeyes fell short in the most important game of the season.
Sure, the chance Ohio State makes it to the playoffs and potentially hosts a first-round playoff game is still right there, but it won’t make the pain of Saturday any less.
At Ohio State, the standard is just different, it’s why a lot of opposing fanbases despise the Scarlet and Grey, and rightfully so.
It don’t mean a thing, it you ain’t got that ring.
Ryan Day holds a 1-4 record against TTUN and is 2-4 in bowl games.
His lone Championship appearance, a blowout loss to Alabama 52 – 24.
In the biggest games, where the lights are brightest, Ryan Day hasn’t been able to get the job done.
Saturday was no different, and as I paced my way through the sea of scarlet back to my car, I began to finally question if we would ever truly reach our ultimate destination.
Can Ryan Day be a championship caliber Head Coach?
And if I’m going solely off his resume, common sense would tell you the answer clearly.
If Ohio State stuns the world and wins a National Championship this season, it won’t take away the results of Saturday’s game, but it’ll sure help us to forget for just a second.
Anything less and I think we’ve seen the last of Coach Day at Ohio State.
Until then, I’ll just keep asking.
“Are we there yet?”
Go Bucks!
